One of things I like to do is spend some time on the streets, find an interesting person and ask if I could draw their portrait. I have done a series of these drawings of homeless people, many of them I had befriended, some I have known for many years, such as this man, Edward. iPad Drawing.
I love painting in an urban setting. There is so much going on, inspiration is everywhere. It is great to paint from life, or paint on site, but sometimes I may have to capture a scene with my iPad camera, such as people walking around. Anything that won’t stay still, might just have to be capture on a photo and paint latter. This is just such a scene in Winooski, Vermont. Painted with my iPad.
With my iPad at hand, my favorite place to be is in a Coffee Shop. With good coffee and many subjects to sketch, what can be better.
I have always been drawn to the urban landscape. Maybe it is because I grew up in the city, perhaps because I have spent a lot of time in NYC. The city at night, especially isolated areas are a bit spooky, but special places to paint, draw or photograph.
Next to life drawing, nothing beats going to a Coffee Cafe and sketching random people while enjoying some fine coffee. I always have my iPad with me for sketching.

I have spent several years sketching the homeless in NYC and in my City, Burlington, Vermont. I have gotten to know most of the homeless, spending time with them, I have even slept in their camps.
This man is Alvin. He has been homeless for 30 years. He has been on the streets for so long, it is the only life he remembers and feels he belongs too.

I love going out around Midnight to some urban back street for some Plein air painting. Sometimes this can be dangerous. I have had my share of violent incidents doing this, but it is worth it to get these urban paintings.
I grew up in the back streets of Bridgeport Connecticut, a very violent city. I learned how to fight at a very young age. But I am comfortable in the urban setting.
