I have always been drawn to the Urban Landscape. Probably because I was born and raised in the city. I have always liked the pulse of the city, the energy of the streets.
This painting was done using my iPad. My old neighborhood!
A place for me to share my art.

Urban Sketchers are a group of artist all over the world who go into urban areas and find something of interest to sketch on site, using any medium of choice.
I love the urban landscape, the energy of the streets, the noise of the city, the atmosphere. I use to be a street photographer, so now as an artist, I still see as a photographer. These days I use an iPad to draw and paint.
This iPad Painting is the Brooklyn Bridge Cafe.

Landscape painting is not really my thing. I do paint a fair amount, but they don’t inspire me like figurative painting and abstract painting does. So when I do landscapes now, I tend to abstract them, and for me, it is more in keeping with my artistic vision. This abstract landscape was done using my iPad.
The abstract art let’s me create many unknown worlds, persons and situations-both real and unreal.
It is up to the viewer to enter them, to meet them, and to feel them.

Living on Lake Champlain, I have constant views of incredible beauty. I can see the Adirondack Mountains, which in themselves have incredible beauty. But what inspires me the most is the storms that come over the Lake, sometimes makes for some very dramatic scenes like this IPad painting.
Plein Air painting with my iPad is fun, but has it’s challenges and limitations. The iPad screen in the sun is difficult. I need to either find shade, or bring my own shading device.
But I still like painting on my iPad. In my state of Vermont, there are a lot of Plein Air artists, but to my knowledge, I am the only one doing so with the iPad. Here is my most recent painting.
Here is another Cafe Drawing, this guy was a great subject. I don’t think he knew I was drawing him.
I love nothing more than to grab my iPad and head over to one of my favorite coffee shops to enjoy a cup of great coffee and look for an interesting face to draw.
This guy came in and I found my subject to draw.
This guy comes in to buy a coffee, then sits at a table facing mine. Since I had a good view, and wanting to sketch an interesting face, so here is the drawing.
Another cafe sketch with my iPad. This was a quick sketch, I had a feeling this person was not going to be here very long.
It has been quite a while since I spent time on the street doing street portraits with my iPad. This was the last one I did a few years back. This man is Alvin, he is homeless, and I got to know him. He let me draw his portrait, and he died shortly after I did this portrait.
Another cafe drawing using my iPad. I have noticed some new coffee shop that have opened in my area, I will need to go check them out.
I was in my favorite Coffee Shop and this guy came in and sat down with his cup of coffee. He was talking to himself, seemed to me to be homeless. I took out my iPad and started to draw him. He was a good and interesting subject, he was still there when I left.
Urban sketching is taking your sketchbook, or other art supplies, in my case my iPad, and go to an urban location and sketch, paint or draw what is of interest. It is sort of an urban Plein air session. I have done this a lot of times, here in my own area, as well as Boston, Montreal, and New York City.
Another cafe drawing. When I took my seat, this guy came in, grabbed his coffee and sat down. He would take a sip then put his head down for several seconds, take a sip, put his head down. He never looked at me or anyone else. He was a good subject to draw.
Another in my series, Cafe Drawings. This woman seemed to be daydreaming. She was in the cafe for over an hour nursing one cup of coffee. I think she may be homeless, but not sure. She was a good subject for a drawing.
